Smart garage door openers have come a long way from the noisy chain-drive units most homes still have. Today's models are quieter, safer, integrate with your phone and smart home, and let you grant temporary access to family or delivery drivers. Here's what to look for in 2026.
Drive type — belt, screw or chain
For attached garages, belt drive is the only choice we recommend. They're whisper-quiet, virtually maintenance-free, and last 20+ years in normal use. Chain drive is cheaper but loud — fine for detached garages where noise doesn't matter. Screw drive sits in the middle but has largely been phased out.
Horsepower (or DC equivalent)
Most single doors are happy with a 1/2 HP motor, but for double doors or insulated doors over 9 feet wide, step up to 3/4 HP or 1.25 HP. Modern DC motors give you smoother starts and stops, less noise, and the option for battery backup.
Wi-Fi and smart features
LiftMaster's myQ platform is the most mature ecosystem and works with Apple Home (with the right hub), Google Home and Alexa. Chamberlain uses the same myQ app. Genie's Aladdin Connect is a solid alternative with broader HomeKit support.
All of them let you open, close and monitor the door from anywhere, get alerts when the door opens or closes, and grant time-limited access to delivery drivers, dog walkers and family.
Battery backup is now law in many jurisdictions
If your opener loses power, you should still be able to get your car out. Many newer LiftMaster and Chamberlain models include integrated battery backup that lasts ~20 cycles on a full charge. We recommend it on every install — power outages always seem to happen on the worst possible morning.
Cameras and security
Camera-equipped openers (LiftMaster Secure View, for example) put a 1080p HD camera in the opener housing aimed at the door. You get live view, motion alerts and recorded clips through the app. For families that worry about kids, packages or break-in attempts, it's a meaningful upgrade.
Frequently asked questions
Will a new smart opener work with my old door?
Almost always, yes. Modern openers are compatible with virtually all standard residential sectional doors. We confirm fitment, door weight and spring balance during the install.
Can I install a smart opener myself?
Technically yes, but professional installation gets the door balance, force settings, safety reversal, photo-eye alignment and travel limits dialed in correctly. These are the settings that matter most for safety and longevity.
Which opener does Master-Tech install most?
The LiftMaster 8500W (wall-mount jackshaft) and 8550WLB (belt drive with battery backup) are our two most-installed models in the GTA in 2026.
