When a cable frays, slips off the drum or snaps entirely, the door becomes unbalanced and unsafe to operate. Cables fail from three main causes: rust and moisture (especially on doors near salt-treated driveways), worn pulleys or drums that fray the strands, and improper tension after a previous repair. We replace cables in matched pairs using galvanized aircraft-grade cable rated well above your door weight, then re-set the drums so both sides travel evenly.
If a cable has snapped, leave the door in place and call us. Running the opener can pull the door off the tracks, damage panels, and put extra strain on the remaining cable and springs. We'll secure the door, replace both cables, and have you operating safely again the same visit.
