Garage doors are the largest uninsulated surface on most Ontario homes — and in a Toronto-area winter, that single panel can leak as much heat as the rest of your exterior walls combined. Here's what you actually get from an insulated door, when it's worth the upgrade, and which models we install most.
What R-value really means
R-value measures resistance to heat flow. Higher numbers insulate better. A typical builder-grade non-insulated steel door has an R-value of about R-2 — basically a tin sheet. A premium polyurethane-injected door from Garaga or Clopay can hit R-16 to R-18, comparable to an insulated wall section.
But the spec sheet only tells half the story. A door's real-world performance depends just as much on weather seals, thermal breaks between panels, and how well the door is balanced. A poorly sealed R-16 door can perform worse than a well-sealed R-12.
When insulation is worth it (almost always)
If your garage is attached to the house, insulation is a no-brainer. Heat loss through the garage door pulls cold air into the rooms above and beside it, drives up your furnace runtime, and makes the garage itself unpleasant to use as a workshop, gym or laundry pass-through.
Detached garages benefit too if you've finished them, store paint or temperature-sensitive items, or run a workshop. For an unfinished detached garage you only walk through to grab a snow shovel, a non-insulated door is fine.
Other benefits beyond heat
Insulated doors are dramatically quieter — both rolling up and down, and as a sound barrier between the garage and the rest of the house. They're also stiffer, which means they dent less easily and last longer in heavy daily use.
Resale value is real too. Real-estate appraisers in the GTA consistently rate insulated doors as a value-add when comparing similar homes.
Models we recommend in 2026
For most GTA homes, our default recommendation is the Garaga Cambridge or Standard+ in R-16, with thermal break and dual weather seals. For modern homes, the Clopay Avante in full-view aluminum (with insulated panels) is gorgeous and surprisingly thermally efficient. For premium budgets, the Garaga Eastman E-23 hits R-18 with a beautiful carriage look.
Frequently asked questions
How much can I save on heating with an insulated door?
Most attached-garage homes see noticeable furnace runtime reductions. Actual dollar savings depend on your home's insulation, garage size and thermostat settings, but homeowners commonly report a more comfortable garage and warmer adjacent rooms within the first winter.
Is R-16 enough for the GTA?
Yes. R-16 is our most recommended spec for the Toronto area — it balances cost, weight and performance. Higher R-values are available but rarely deliver enough additional benefit to justify the price for residential use.
Can I add insulation to my existing door?
DIY insulation kits exist but rarely perform as well as a properly engineered insulated door, and the added weight can throw off your spring balance. We usually recommend replacement over retrofit.
